Roullete, also spelled roulette or roullete, is a casino game that involves betting on the number or type of number the ball will come to rest in when the dealer spins the wheel. The game has offered glamour, mystery and excitement to casino-goers since the 17th century and continues to be a favorite worldwide. While the rules of the game are relatively simple, there is a surprising level of depth for serious betters to explore, and the correct strategy can reap high rewards.
The game is played on a table with a circular layout that has in its center a revolving wheel divided into thirty-six compartments numbered alternately red and black. In addition to the main compartments numbered 1 through 36, there is an extra green compartment numbered 0 on European-style wheels and a second green compartment numbered 00 on American tables (although this makes the latter a worse game than its European counterpart). Each bet is made by laying chips on the table that correspond with the compartments on the wheel.
Prior to spinning the wheel, players place their bets by putting chips on a betting mat where they indicate the bet type they are making. The precise placement of the chips is critical, as each bet type has a different house edge and pays out differently. Bets placed on individual numbers or groups of numbers are called Inside bets, and those on a row of six or more are known as Outside bets.
After the croupier spins the wheel and drops the ball into one of the compartments, winning bets are paid out and losing bets removed from the table. The process is repeated until all bets have been settled and the winnings paid to the player.
Before entering a casino, set a budget and choose a roulette table within that limit. Each table will carry a placard that describes the minimum and maximum bets allowed. Generally speaking, roulette tables offer higher minimum bets for inside bets and lower maximum bets for outside bets. Choosing a table with a higher minimum bet allows you to play for longer and limits your exposure to the house’s edge. The best way to increase your odds is to choose a bet type that you are comfortable with and understand the odds of. For example, a bet on a single number or small groupings of numbers has a much higher house edge than bets on larger groups of numbers, but the payouts are usually higher as well.
